About Us

The Georgia Dressage & Combined Training Association (GDCTA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization dedicated to promoting the equestrian sports of dressage and combined training (eventing). Run entirely by volunteers, the association and its members regularly organize and sponsor various activities designed to heighten its members' and the general public's knowledge of and appreciation for dressage and combined training.

GDCTA belongs to Zone 4 of US Equestrian Federation (USEF). In addition, GDCTA is a Region 3 Group Member Organization of the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) and an Area III Associate Member of the United States Eventing Association (USEA). GDCTA is the largest organization of its kind in the southeastern United States, boasting nearly 700 members. GDCTA members range from first-time riders to  Olympians.

A Short History of the GDCTA

The Georgia Dressage and Combined Training Association (GDCTA) began in 1974 when a handful of metro Atlanta dressage enthusiasts banded together to form an organization to promote the art and sport of dressage in the state of Georgia. That early organization, known as the Greater Atlanta Dressage Association (GADA), sponsored Georgia's first-ever dressage competition in April 1974 at a farm just north of Atlanta. The judge at that competition was a local youngster named Robert Dover, who has since gone on to represent the U.S. in dressage in four Olympic games.

GADA held its first Nationally-recognized dressage show, The Greater Atlanta Dressage Southern, in April 1974. The Southern has since turned into an annual spring event in Georgia, drawing riders from all over the southeastern United States to compete under nationally and internationally-recognized judges. A second Nationally-recognized competition, the Atlanta National Fall Dressage Show, is held in autumn each year. In 1995, the fall show was held in conjunction with the United States Dressage Federation Region 3 Championships, hosted by GDCTA at the then brand-new Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers, Georgia, site of the 1996 Olympic equestrian competition.

To accommodate a growing state-wide interest in combined training and eventing, it wasn't long before GADA voted to include this discipline also, changing its name to the Georgia Dressage & Combined Training Association to reflect this expanded focus. GDCTA is an active supporter of the combined training endeavors of its members, sponsoring cross-country schooling days at area farms each year, as well as cross-country and stadium jumping clinics with noted eventing trainers from around the world.

Now, three decades after its humble beginnings, GDCTA is one of the most dynamic equestrian organizations in the state, offering a year-round slate of events. On any given weekend, you might find a Dressage Competition, a Horse Trial, or even an International Three Day Event - sometimes a combination of all of these - going on somewhere in Georgia. Always GDCTA is there, providing educational and/or organizational assistance and volunteer support, encouraging new organizers and new riders while cheering on the advanced competitors as well.

GDCTA looks forward to an exciting future as more and more people throughout Georgia and the southeastern United States discover the thrill of dressage and combined training.

  • It is the rider's responsibility to make sure we have received your form. Check - often.
  • Point tabulation based on placing in a class will only apply for CT. See CT rules for details.

Volunteer Information

GDCTA is a member-focused and member-run organization that depends on volunteers! We encourage you to become involved in any of the many activities we offer. Scribing at a show is a great educational experience and will make you a better rider! If you're a trainer, volunteer your time for a Kudzu Klinic... Have a new idea? Bring it to the board at a meeting.

GDCTA is currently in the process of expanding our list of volunteers for 2010. Now is your chance to give back to the organization that continually strives to make your dressage and eventing dreams and goals a reality. We are in constant need of volunteers for our wonderful recognized shows, schooling shows and many other activities.

Please plan on setting a day aside this year for GDCTA. Volunteering is fun and educational! Never volunteered before? No problem! We'll walk you through it. Complete training provided!

Our volunteer coordinator is Liz Faso. Contact her via email or phone at 770-921-3848

To receive current copies of the newsletter you must be a member of GDCTA.

The editor encourages members to submit original articles, photographs, and artwork for possible publication. We will make every effort to include submissions received on disk or by email, by the deadline in the next issue. The goal of Collected Remarks is to serve the needs of the membership. Feel free to contact the editor anytime with questions, comments or criticism. GDCTA is not responsible for the opinions and statements expressed in signed articles and paid advertisements.

Annual Advertising Package

In an effort to offer a cost effective, convenient means of promoting products and services to the membership, GDCTA has developed an Annual Advertising Package. The package includes:
  • GDCTA Membership Directory: Published annually.
  • GDCTA Newsletter - Collected Remarks: Published monthly
  • GDCTA Show Programs: Publish semi-annually.
Marketing products and services through the GDCTA is very focused. The target audience uses the organization's publications as current sources of information throughout the year. The combination of annual publications (Membership Directory), semi-annual show programs and the monthly newsletter offer continuous exposure and name recognition. The primary benefit the Annual Ad Package offers is cost savings. A flat 25% discount is applied to the total cost of advertisements selected. For as little as $218, your business card advertisement will appear in 13 publications to be viewed by hundreds of equestrians in Georgia and the Southeast. An advertiser electing to place full-page ads for 10 issues plus the other publications as required by the Ad Package would realize savings of more than $450.00. These savings are available without sacrificing flexibility. By selecting the size of ad copy early, your space is reserved in every issue. The actual copy simply needs to be received by the
individual publication deadline. This allows the ability to change or update content and present timely information.

Current publication deadlines are:
Membership Directory:  March 31
The Greater Atlanta Dressage Southern Program: March 12
Southern Hospitality Dressage Breeders’ Classic I&II Program: August 31
Atlanta National Fall Dressage Program: October 1
GDCTA Newsletter -- Collected Remarks:  the 10th of each month

Annual advertisers will receive a copy of each publication and will be notified of other promotional opportunities when available. To sign up for the GDCTA Annual Ad Package, simply complete the worksheet on the back and send a copy along with a check payable to GDCTA to the address listed. You will receive a prompt conformation of your order as well as a list of contacts responsible for each publication. This allows for your ad copy to be tailored to each production.

Letter from the President

Dear Member:

On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your support and continuing participation. We are truly grateful for you membership, without which we wouldn’t have an organization.

Your membership enabled us to accomplish so much in 2009! GDCTA hosted
  • the USDF “L” Program
  • two USEF/USDF horse shows and one schooling show
  • multiple eventing clinics
GDCTA is planning for another busy year! In 2010, we will be
  • wrapping up the L program—hopefully, resulting in 10 new “L” graduates!
  • hosting a life enhancement seminar with Gil Merrick (see February calendar for details)
  • hosting the 2010 Great American Insurance Group/USDF Region 3 Championships October 15-17 (we’ll be asking for many volunteers for this one!)
Although we thrive on volunteer support, renewals are vital to our success! By remaining a member, we will be able to accomplish the many events planned for the year.

If you renew your membership before March 31, you will be listed in the Membership Directory and can use your two free business listings in that Directory.

Remember that by joining GDCTA, you are also joining USDF. So, joining GDCTA is BOGO—buy 1 get 1 free!

Please join us in making our area a better place to enjoy our horses! Renew your membership today!

Sincerely,
Rick Cohn
GDCTA President

Opening Date: August 1, 2010 Closing Date: September 18, 2010

GDCTA is proud to announce that we will be hosting the 2010 Great American Insurance Group/USDF Region 3 Dressage Championships on October 15-17,  2010 at the Horse Park.

This event is always exciting, but it is a huge undertaking. We hope all of our members will participate in some way. We want to see you in the rings as much as we could use your help as volunteers!

Since this show runs concurrently with the Atlanta National Fall Dressage show over 3 days with up to 8 rings, we’ll need approximately 100 volunteers, plus ring set-up and tear-down crews before and after the show.

Our Volunteer Coordinator Liz Faso is already beginning the volunteer assignments. Contact her today to see what you can do!

There’s also always the need for class and corporate sponsors (contact June Brewer gdctaenews@aol.com), vendors for the Vendor Village and advertising in the program. Please help support your show!

New Advertising Option: Have your banner hung in the warm up arena for just $50.

Contact June Brewer for more information.

Kudzu Klinic Update

Gigi Nutter and rider

2010 GDCTA Kudzu Klinic Series Off and Running

March 20 marked the beginning of the 2010 Kudzu Klinic series sponsored by GDCTA. The Kudzu Klinics are presented each year as a service to the members of GDCTA. Local clinicians volunteer their services as do local barns to give low-cost instructional opportunities to those new to the community, looking for an instructor, or maybe new to one of the disciplines supported by GDCTA and looking for an opportunity to “try it out.” The goal established by the GDCTA Board is to support four Kudzu Klinics in each year.

The opening offering this year was hosted by Cindy Bickman and Stepping Stone Farm with Gigi Nutter as the clinician. Eight riders and several auditors spent the day working on a number of basic dressage movements. If you have never been to Stepping Stone Farm, it has a wonderful indoor arena and a great sound system, making the experience especially conducive to auditors. By all accounts this was a very successful Kudzu Klinic.

Next in the series will be another dressage clinic hosted by Blalock Lakes and Jos Sevierns on Saturday, May 8, 2010. Blaylock Lakes is in the Newnan area and is convenient to GDCTA members living south of the Atlanta area. Jos will be working with up to ten riders on the skills needed to open the communications between each individual rider and horse with the goal of building a daily work routine to take the rider and horse beyond just learning “the tricks” for the show ring.

On Saturday June 26, 2010, we will be offering a somewhat different Kudzu Klinic. There is a fair amount of interest in Musical Freestyles. The development of a successful Musical Freestyle is a little more involved than just “riding to music.” Marissa and Johnny Woodall of Musical Freestyles have volunteered to spend a day with us going over the elements of a good musical freestyle. In the morning, we will be discussing topics such as gait analysis, selection of music, some thoughts on what judges are looking for in the rides, etc. During the afternoon session we will be working with four different riders on their musical freestyle both as help to them and to demonstrate the concepts from the morning discussion real-time to those in attendance. This Kudzu Klinic can accommodate up to twenty auditors and four riders.

The last Kudzu Klinic of the 2010 season will be taught by Barbara Handley and is tentatively scheduled for September 18th at Stepping Stone Farm. Details are being completed for this Kudzu Klinic. Please watch the GDCTA website for the formal
announcement of this Klinic.

Membership in GDCTA is required to attend these Klinics. If you are not a GDCTA member, you can join and avail yourself of this opportunity for a great day of instruction and fun at a very reasonable cost. Already a member, please add a Kudzu Klinic to your calendar
